NPC FAQ

NPC FAQ Back to Navigation So we can steal from NPCs? Or natives to the world of Glymmer?

Yes, you absolutely can! Your character may be stealing from the natives of Glymmer quite a bit actually, depending on how you decide to play the game.

Iiiii don't know, I'm not super into the idea of playing an NPC. . .

That's okay! Despite there being a big element of "stealing from the natives of Glymmer," you don't have to interact with this aspect of the game if you don't want to! You can keep your heists to PCs only (just ask the player of the character you want to steal from if it's okay), or to plotty mod-run heists only (though bear in mind that sign ups for these are limited). The credits rewards system (as well as the wish system) is there to encourage characters to complete missions, but OOCly and ICly there is nothing forcing them to complete missions. The goal is for players to interact with whatever missions and aspects of the game they find the most fun OOCly!

Okay, but what if I want to steal from NPCs but don't want to play them?

That's okay, too! You can steal from a Glymmer native but just never have them show up in the thread, so you don't have to actually write them/play them in any capacity whatsoever. If you're stealing from a RICH WIDOWER WITH LOTS OF FAMOUS PAINTINGS, the thread can just cover the breaking-and-entering, sneaking past the widower's security, for example. The widower himself never has to make an appearance. If you want to steal from a museum and deal with A TON OF POLICE OFFICERS SURROUNDING THE BUILDING, you don't actually have to play the police officers. You can just include that they're there, for flavor text, while ~cleverly~ finding a way to bypass them.

The focus on the game is CR building between PCs through completing missions and heists, so despite there being a large element of stealing from Glymmer natives, you really don't have to worry about working those natives into your threads at all. The focus of the thread should be that CR building, PC-to-PC interaction. Do what is most fun for you! That is the number one goal when it comes to mission completion and crafting heists.

I'd like to steal from a Glymmer native and also work the NPC into my threads a little bit! Is that okay?

Yes! That's 100% okay if that's what you want to do!

How much am I allowed to make up about a Glymmer native I steal from?

Honestly? The sky's the limit, here. You can make up a plain woman with a purse to pickpocket from on the sidewalk. You can make up a corrupt CEO with lots of money on offshore bank accounts to steal from. You can make up a one-off native that you utilize for one thread and never see again. You can make up a recurring native that your character steals from every single month. Go wild, it's okay!

The only limitations are:

✬ You can't make up a native that has ties to the Ragamuffins guild

✬ You can't make up a native that has strong ties to the Glymmer Metropolitan Police Department. Plain clothes officers and low-ranking beat cops are okay, though!

✬ You can't make up a native that is a part of a BIG TIME RIVAL THIEF GUILD. Small-time thief guilds with little notoriety are fine, as are other underground criminal rings! But no big-name guilds that the Ragamuffins would've heard from before.

Can I make up natives for my friends to steal from and run the NPCs for my friends?

Totally and absolutely! If you want to run a little exploradora/cyoa-type heist thing for your friends, that's completely okay! I wouldn't make a new account for it (instead run it via your character account that's already a part of the community), but like, go wild man.

Can I play one of the mod-run NPCs, like Topaz?

Thaaaat is a big no unfortunately, but only because NPCs like Topaz are plot important. Topaz is, in fact, the only mod-run NPC to be revealed right now though, so don't sweat this too much.

Can I play X NPC?

The answer is probably yes, but if you're not sure, drop me a line on the Q&A page and we can chat!

So what is your aim here, exactly?

My goal here is to create the framework of a world that people feel comfortable assuming and making up things about. I've got the basic setting and the major players of the world, but otherwise, I want people to run WILD AND FREE with the things they have the most fun with. I don't want people to feel stifled or like, "I can't do X because it's not explicitly mentioned on any of the info pages." Further, I want to encourage diversity and creativity in the kind of heists people hold, and the sorts of things that characters steal. I'm hoping that this little FAQ kind of gives people an idea of what is and isn't okay, but I am always open to answer questions. If you need some guidance, just hit up the Q&A page and we can talk!

I want to steal from a Glymmer native, but don't want to write an NPC and can't find a friend who will run a thing for me. Help?

Some people have been kind enough to volunteer as dedicated NPC runners, or people who write up scenarios and run exploradoras/cyos for people who want a little more guidance for their heists! LOVE THEM, FOR YOU KNOW I DO, FOR THEY ARE THE KINDEST BEST PEOPLE IN THE WORLD FOR DEDICATING THEIR TIME. Right now our dedicated NPC runners are:

How does requesting an NPC runner run a thing for me work?

Post a comment to this page filling out the form below to request a runner! So as not to take advantage of their kindness, you may request an NPC run heist once a month. Be patient after putting in the request for the runner to get in contact with you as well, and make sure to thank them for making themselves available when it's over!

How do the exploradora/cyoas work?

In order to not overwhelm our runners, all exploradora/cyoas will be run ECATS style. What this basically means is that preferably you and the runner will dedicate a day or two to boomeranging an exploration thread, and finish out the heist within the week. This is so no monthly mission heist gets dragged out so long that our runners get worn out! If your schedule or tagging style doesn't allow for allotting, say, an afternoon or two for banging out some quick rapid-fire tags, that's okay! You don't have to make use of this feature at all. It is here as something totally and completely optional!
