SETTING

General:
Glymmer is a modern city with technological advances on par with 2019. The architecture is most similar to modern Tokyo or New York, with towering skyscrapers and shining mirrored buildings and whatnot. It is not, however, a direct replica of either. Glymmer is also a city where citizens weave magic into their daily living. Very urban fantasy!
It is always night time in Glymmer, for aesthetic. The difference between night and day is dictated by the city's two moons. The red moon is the day moon, and rises in the east and sets in the west. The blue moon is the night moon, which also rises in the east and sets in the west. Otherwise it is always dark out and the city's lights are always on. Somehow even the city's light pollution does not blot out the sky's stars.
There are twenty-four hours in a normal day, just like Earth time. The Glymmer calendar, the names of the twelve months, holidays, and the passage of seasons also mirrors the Earth calendar, just. . . to make things easier on everyone. . .
Magic in Glymmer:
Magic is like another branch of technology. Those who study it tend to get jobs in research and development for big businesses or nonprofits and such. Not everybody practices magic, but everybody is used to living with it. It powers electronic devices, helps them do their laundry and dishes, assists them in cooking dinner, and so on and so forth.
As a result of all of this urban magic, weird SHIT is always happening in Glymmer. When magic fucks up like technology is apt to, it usually causes residual status effects on anyone who is nearby. Citizens are used to it! Sometimes your husband comes home because IT fucked with his computer and accidentally turned him into a fish! Sometimes an entire city block hiccups bubbles for a week because one of the power lines fritzed and cast a bubble spell on everyone!! The basic attitude is that these fuck ups are minor in nature and mildly inconvenient so everyone just sighs and moves on with their day when they happen.
Because weird shit is always happening in Glymmer, citizens are always super blase to abnormal seeming things. While the primary race in Glymmer is humans, they won't bat an eye at characters who are obviously non-human, like dragons or people with non-human features or whatnot.
Locations:
✬ Glymmer Ragamuffins Dorms: This is where characters wake up when they first arrive in Glymmer. A plain brick-and-mortar building that has obviously seen better days, it is several stories high with many rooms on each floor. Each dorm room comes with a single twin-sized bed, a night stand, a desk, and a spinny chair to go with it. They are otherwise very plain, painted beige, and completely undecorated.Other Locations:On the first floor of the dorms is a lobby with couches and chairs and a beaten up piano where characters can hang out. There is also a front desk which is manned by. . . no one! Huh. Weird. There's further a cafeteria on the first floor that provides breakfast, lunch and dinner for characters, although no matter how hard they search, characters will never be able to find who is making the food. . . the food is also very mediocre and oftentimes bland, but it'll fill you up and keep you healthy.
Characters may do their laundry in the first floor laundry room, which is also incidentally where they can claim new civilian clothing. The clothing provided in the laundry room is free for any Ragamuffin's use, but it's extremely plain and boring and peasant-like.
Characters are free to decorate their dorm rooms as they see fit when they have the funds! They are also free to move out if they find a better place to live. These are just the most basic of amenities for all new arrivals.
✬ The JUSTICE!1 District: The area of the city where all things related to JUSTICE!1 are located! This includes things like courthouses, lawyer's offices, police stations, and the large Glymmer Metropolitan Police Force Headquarters. This is probably the safest area of the city, considering the high concentration of uniformed officers and plain-clothes detectives. There isn't much crime here! And yes, it is ICly called the JUSTICE!1 district. The older city mayor named it.
✬ Glymmer Metropolitan Police Force Headquarters: Located in the JUSTICE!1 district, it is a a tall and imposing building where the city's police force makes its home. For now, characters only have access to the lobby, where they can interact with a receptionist who will help them file criminal complaints. If they have any.
If characters find themselves on the police force's wanted list or get themselves arrested, more of the police force headquarters maaaaay become available at a later time.
The police force contains as mall branch solely for consulting detectives.
✬ The Market District: The area of the city where shops thrive. This is where characters can go shopping for clothes, food, shoes, jewelry, and anything else they might need. Some of the shops are in buildings, but there are plenty of street vendors trying to sell you knock-off purses as well. Some of those street vendors may be a liiiiittle pushy.
✬ Knick Knack Department Store: The city's largest department store, located in the Market District! You can find anything you need here at fairly cheap and affordable prices. There are advertisements for the department store all over the city, plastered on the side of public transportation and on billboards that tower above most buildings. Sometimes, you think you can hear whispers about how the department store is run by a handsome young heir who inherited his parents' fortune. . . but you can never get the heir's name, no matter how hard you pry.
✬ The Arcane District: The scholarly area of the city, where schools, universities, and academic research facilities are located. Called the Arcane District because most of the scholars in this area of town are magicians of some sort. Here you'll find old used bookstores, hipster coffee shops, school buildings, university campuses, and parks where people can go to unwind.
✬ Petal Park: The city's largest park that spans several city blocks in the Arcane District. It has sprawling park trails that curve between shady trees, blooming plants, and other city wildlife (such as squirrels and ducks and doves). There's a small lake in the park surrounded by benches where people can feed the ducks or even fish, if they so choose. The fields of the park are always inhabited by fireflies, so it's a good place to take a date, if you're into that sort of thing. Sometimes the fireflies land in the tree branches, which makes it look like the trees are covered in tiny, flickering lights.
✬ The Entertainment District: Where people go in the city to have fun! This is the district where your bars, theaters, museums, restaurants, arcades and other entertainment-related buildings are located. There are a ton of street performers busking on corners for money too, and they may be a liiiittle too pushy when it comes to asking for money. The Entertainment District seems to have a seedier underbelly, but you only hear whispers about what goes on in the shadows and can never seem to get any information on who may be running that seedy underbelly.
✬ Glymmer Museum of Modern Art: The city's largest art museum located in the Entertainment District. Think the New York Metropolitan if you're asking about size. It houses some of the finest, rarest, most expensive pieces of artwork that can be found in the city. It also houses some of the toughest and most state-of-the-art security. But hey, that should be a challenge, right?
✬ Firefly Hot Springs: On the edge of the city, located in no district at all, is a nice cozy onsen where characters can go to unwind, if they wish. It boasts of two naturally heated outdoor baths, but both of them are co-ed and not at all separated by sex or gender. The hot springs also afford characters a lovely view of the fireflies at night. There are also amenities for characters to spend the night in warm and comfortable rooms, if they so please!
The above constitute only the named locations in Glymmer. Players are free to make up smaller shops, businesses, hotels, museums, etc. at will, if they choose! There's no limit on what kinds of locations players can create, either. And when it comes to creating places for player characters to live, each named district has its fair share of residential areas, so. Go wild!
Can my character leave Glymmer?
I think you should ping a mod to find out if your character would try ;D
Can my character blow up a building??
YES, ABSOLUTELY!! So long as it isn't one of the named buildings above, you're golden!! If you make any big settings changes like. . . blowing up buildings. . . please let a mod know on the contact page so we can keep track of it and have the setting react accordingly!
